Hello, I am a HUGE geek. I like to watch gamers on YouTube and whenever I find a new ship, I tend to internally scream. If I find a new nOtp, I visibly gag and do whisper screams. How do I stop myself from overreacting over ships?

Overreacting. It’s the word that has been used to shame fangirls for decades. Stop overreacting. Why are you overreacting? BLERG.

There are many stories society tells about how excited we should get about things. Sports. Politics. Tacos. All acceptable things to get all riled up about. Anything a teenage girl would get excited about? Not acceptable. N. O. P. E.

So I can’t tell you to stop overreacting. Because only you get to decide what’s worthy of your love, attention, and whisper screams. Maybe your teacher gets to decide when you’re in the classroom and follow her rules, or your mom gets to decide when you’re a passenger in her car, but when you’re by your lonesome, earbuds in, heart full, arms flapping, all is fair and acceptable.

However. (You knew there was going to be a however, right?) *clears throat* However, you as a human being are responsible for your reactions. If you choose to lose all of your sh** and cartwheel down the street, you’re also choosing to cope with coming down from that high. If you’re choosing to post a lengthy diatribe on Tumblr promoting your ship, you must choose how to deal with the people who disagree with you.

What I’m trying to say is the seesaw always tilts. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So the more you react to what you love, the more prepared you have to be to take care of yourself. There is no right or wrong way to fangirl. But there are smart, healthy ways to take care of yourself.

You can counter your feels with simple things like hydrating in between freakouts, setting aside some quiet time for yoga or mindfulness, or scheduling quality time with friends in between your solo YouTube binges. Think of these activities as lifeboats for whatever ship you decide to board. Just having them available reduces half the anxiety.

You’re not overreacting Isabella. You’re just an enthusiastic, imaginative person. Take care of yourself, and enjoy your internal screaming.
